Nels Running graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado, Class of 1964. From 1971 to 1974 he served as a demonstration pilot and squadron operations officer with the U.S. Air Force THUNDERBIRDS. He retired in 1997 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
