Sam Parish enlisted in the Air Force in 1954 and in 1973 he graduated from the first class of the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Gunter Air Force Station, Alabama. In 1983 he was selected the Eighth Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, serving in that top enlisted post until his retirement in 1986. Awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal upon his retirement, he was the FIRST enlisted airman to ever receive that high award.
