David Rippetoe was commissioned during World War II through the Aviation Cadet program, but left active duty in 1945, at which time he entered the South Carolina National Guard. He subsequently attended The Citadel and the South Carolina School of Law. He was recalled to active duty in 1950, and subsequently retired in 1979 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
