Department of the Air Force, General Orders No. 57 (August 22, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Ralph M. Mull (AFSN: AF-17261461), United States Air Force, for heroism on 29 March 1950 near Alamogordo, New Mexico. While assigned to the Holloman Air Force Base Fire Department, Corporal Mull was asked to assist in the rescue of two civilians who had been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes at the bottom of a 100 foot well. Arriving at the scene of the tragedy, Corporal Mull equipped himself with the only available gas mask and voluntarily descended to the base of the well. After working diligently for half an hour, Corporal Mull’s mask failed and he was pulled to the surface unconscious. His courageous action in exposing himself to extreme danger to aid a fellow man reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
