The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Soldier’s Medal (Posthumously) to Major Charles J. Boise, Jr. (AFSN: AO-426359), United States Air Force, for heroism on 23 March 1950 at Griffiss Air Force Base, Rome, New York. A C-17 type aircraft on which Major Boise was acting as Instructor Pilot crashed at the end of the runway immediately after take-off on an instrument training flight. Although painfully injured in the crash, Major Boise delayed his escape from the flaming wreckage in an unsuccessful effort to extricate the unconscious pilot. Severe burns suffered as a result of this gallant action later caused his death. Major Boise’s disregard for his personal safety to aid a helpless fellow officer exemplifies the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
