John McDonnell was commisioned in the Army Cavalry in 1913, transferring to the Aviation Section i9n 1915. At the beginning of World War II he was assigned as Commanding General of the Interceptor Command, FIRST Air Force at Mitchel Field, New York, and retired in 1943 as a U.S. Army Air Forces Brigadier General.
