William Gravely was appointed a U.S. Army Field Artillery Reserve first lieutenant in 1917, after attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He graduated from the Air Service Pilot School in 1921, serving with the Army Air Forces throughout World War II, and retiring in 1945 as a U.S. Army Air Forces Brigadier General.
