The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edward G. Walter (MCSN: 342568), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tractor Crew Chief of the First Amphibian Tractor Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced) in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands on 18 September 1944. While carrying supplies to a Marine Battalion, Corporal Walter observed an LCI explode and sink immediately in the waters between Peleliu and Ngesebus Islands. Fully aware that the intervening beach and sea were heavily mined he courageously and unhesitatingly drove his vehicle to the scene of the shipwreck and in company with another man, saved the lives of eight seamen, boldly swimming to the rescue of the wounded and exhausted. His bravery, initiative and unselfish concern for the lives of others were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
