The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant John K. Walsh (MCSN: 299639), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a platoon leader serving with the Twenty-second Marines, Reinforced in action against enemy Japanese forces during the landing operations on Engebi and Parry Islands, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands on 18 and 22 February 1944. Immediately assuming command of an adjacent platoon when the leader was killed by enemy fire during an engagement on Engebi Island, Platoon Sergeant Walsh skillfully organized the men and courageously led them forward against severe determined hostile resistance, thus enabling them to complete their assigned mission. At Parry Island on 22 February, he again displayed outstanding initiative and heroism, leading fierce attacks on enemy machine gun positions and a stronghold of spider type trenches until he was fatally wounded. Platoon Sergeant Walsh’s indomitable fighting spirit and valiant leadership were an inspiration to his men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
