The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) William D. Frymire (ASN: 0-727711), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight. On 24 September 1943, Captain Frymire was pilot of a B-26 on a mission to bomb a road bridge northeast of *****, Italy. Just prior to the bombing run, his plane was badly damaged by accurate and intense anti-aircraft fire. While attempting to keep his crippled aircraft in formation, fragments from an exploding shell critically wounded his co-pilot. Although the plane went into a steep dive when the unconscious body of the co-pilot slumped over the wheel, Captain Frymire managed to remove his wounded comrade and succeeded in regaining control of the aircraft. This officer then led the entire group over the target to complete a successful bombing run. By his clear thinking and coolness under fire, Captain Frymire made possible the completion of the assigned mission. His unfailing devotion to duty in 36 sorties against the enemy has upheld the highest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
