The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Technical Sergeant Tommie C. Wood, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Shemya Air Force Base, Alaska, on 15 March 1981. On that date, the aircraft in which Sergeant Wood was a crewmember crashed and he was thrown several feet from the site of the crash. He immediately unstrapped himself from his metal crewmember’s seat and rushed to the site of the burning aircraft. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Wood, despite the hazard of exploding fuel cells, unhesitatingly entered the flaming aircraft and persevered in his humanitarian efforts until he succeeded in removing one of the injured victims to a place of safety. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Wood has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
