The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James E. Wall (MCSN: 362106), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Island on 28 July 1944. When the advance of his company was halted by enemy troops firing from caves, Private First Class Wall voluntarily went forward to reduce these positions and, making three successive advances over exposed terrain and returning each time for more hand grenades, succeeded in neutralizing six enemy occupied caves, thereby enabling his company to advance and capture the objective. Continuing his courageous actions during a subsequent engagement with the hostile forces, he was seriously wounded and evacuated on 9 August. His perseverance and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
