The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edwin Walkley (MCSN: 811238), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tinian, Mariana Islands on 24 July 1944. Landing on the heavily fortified beachhead with the first assault wave on D-Day, Private First Class Walkley immediately moved into position under the enemy’s concentrated barrages and firing his weapon with deadly accuracy, poured a steady stream of return fire against the emplacements on his right flank. Fighting furiously despite intense opposition, he fearlessly risked his life to destroy the enemy and, while boldly advancing against the positions was fatally struck down by a bursting shell. By his daring initiative, dauntless perseverance and cool and courageous action in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Walkley contributed materially to the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
