Raymond Preston was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1956 upon graduation from the University of Minnesota. He retired in 1984 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

Preston, Jr., United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Squadron Navigator and Executive Officer of the 776th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Chung Chuan King Air Base, Taiwan, in action against the enemy during 400 Combat mission in C-130E Aircraft over Southeast Asia from 1967 to 1968. His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
