The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert F. Wahl (MCSN: 293325), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 16 March 1945. Observing two wounded comrades in front of the main lines, Sergeant Wahl made his way with a companion under heavy sniper fire to the wounded men. When his companion was hit while on the return trip after removing one of the wounded men, Sergeant Wahl removed him to safety and making his way alone back to the second Marine, evacuated him also. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
