The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Lyle E. Wagaman (MCSN: 328748), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 22 February 1945. Pinned down with his entire company by a furious barrage of enemy machine gun fire, Corporal Wagaman unhesitatingly risked his life to advance into an area of hostile blasting and Japanese sniper fire to rescue a severely wounded Marine who was struggling to reach a position of safety. Placing the wounded man on his back he crawled toward a defiladed position of comparative safety but was mortally wounded by fire from several hostile positions before reaching the protected spot. His unflinching courage and self-sacrificing efforts on behalf of his comrade reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Wagaman and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
