The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Sidney B. Vosper (MCSN: 309467), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 10 May 1945. Although severely wounded when the intensity of hostile rifle and machine-gun fire rendered his company’s position untenable, Corporal Vosper went to his platoon leader to obtain permission to withdraw from the high ground. Wounded again while returning to the squad, he skillfully extricated his men from their precarious position with a minimum of casualties and remained with the squad until it had been sufficiently reorganized to continue the attack. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
