William Nicholson enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1944, but the war ended before he finished his training. He returned to school, and was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1950 upon graduation from Parks College of St. Louis. During the Korean War he was shot down over North Korea but evaded capture and returned to his unit. He retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
