Douglas Nelson enlisted in the Oregon National Guard in 1940 and was called to active duty in 1941. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he was discharged in 1946 but returned to service upon being commissioned in 1947. He retired in 1974 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
