The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Cornelius A. Voermans (MCSN: 907785), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Fire Team Leader, serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Group, 15 May 1945. While his company was attacking a fiercely defended Japanese fortification which was firmly entrenched in the crest of a hill, Private First Class Voermans advanced ahead of his unit to a position from which he could hurl grenades at the enemy emplacements. When his squad was forced to withdraw due to the intensity of the enemy fire, he valiantly stood his ground, calling for more grenades which he showered upon the Japanese until he was mortally wounded. His unflinching courage, valiant determination and heroic efforts throughout resulted in heavy enemy casualties and reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Voermans and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
