The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Monte D. Montgomery, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of an AC-47 aircraft of the 4th Air Commando Squadron, over the Republic of Vietnam on the night of 11 December 1966. On that date after having already successfully defended two outposts and a New Life Hamlet, Captain Montgomery and his crew flew to the assistance of a Battalion f the Army of the Republic of Vietnam which was in heavy contact with the hostiles at Nhi Quy Village, a vital highway junction. In spite of adverse weather and intense hostile fire Captain Montgomery and his crew provided light to the friendlies and made repeated attacks upon the hostiles. The actions of Captain Montgomery and his crew under fire enabled a counterattack to be launched and the hostiles routed. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Montgomery reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
