The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Carl S. Miller (AFSN: FR-45411), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an F-100 pilot with the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing, Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in action in Southeast Asia on 28 October 1967. On that date, Colonel Miller was leading a flight of three F-100’s on a combat support mission in preparation for a helicopter air assault near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam. With both of his wingmen experiencing mechanical aircraft difficulties and while being subjected to hostile automatic weapons fire, Colonel Miller made repeated low level attacks on the hostile forces paving the way for the air assault. As a result of is actions the air assault was accomplished without a single casualty being inflicted on the friendly force. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Lieutenant Colonel Miller has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
