After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Robert Maloy transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. During the Vietnam War his aircraft was hit over North Vietnam, but he managed to reach the sea before he ejected and was subsequently recovered, although he was seriously injured. He retired in 1975 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
