Leland Lukens enlisted in the Air Force as an airman basic in 1953 and was awarded the American Spirit of Honor Medal. He was commissioned in 1955 through the Aviation Cadet Program. He retired in 1982 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

Lukens, United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an A-1E Skyraider Pilot of the 1st Air Commando Squadron, Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in action against the enemy during 272 combat missions over Southeast Asia from 1965 to 1966. His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
