Cecil Lessig served in the Navy for three years as an airplane mechanic before taking Air Corps flight training and receiving his commission in 1937. In 1936 he earned the Frank Luke Trophy for the highest gunnery score in the Air Corps. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1962 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
