The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Henry Van Joslin (MCSN: 0-10149), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Commanding Officer of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 21 February 1945. When the advance of his company had been halted by heavy hostile fire, Captain Joslin voluntarily stepped to the front of his company and personally led the advance over open terrain through intense Japanese mortar, machine-gun and sniper fire, thereby contributing materially to the successful attainment of his company’s objective. His inspiring leadership, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
