Carol Lee entered active duty as an internist-gastroenterologist in July 1984 after graduating from Cornell University in 1975, followed by advanced Medical studies at John Hopkins Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania. She retired in 2013 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
