Charles Irions enlisted in the Air Force after graduating from high school in 1947 and attended college under the Bootstrap program. He became the Air Force’s youngest Master Sergeant. He was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1953. He retired in 1981 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
