After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. As a fighter pilot during the Korean War, he was credited with shooting down one enemy MiG in aerial combat. He retired in 1974 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

Hesse (AO0827204), United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as an F-86 Fighter Pilot of the 4th Fighter Group, in action over Korea on 18 June 1951. On that date, Captain Hesse destroyed one enemy MiG aircraft in aerial combat. The skillful and zealous manner in which he has sought out the enemy and destroyed him, his devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Force of the United States.
