The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jack E. Tuttle (MCSN: 369737), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Sixth marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 15 June 1944. Although severely wounded, Sergeant Tuttle directed his squad across open ground under heavy machine gun and mortar fire and striking at an enemy position continued the attack until three hostile machine gun positions were destroyed. His outstanding leadership courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
