James Granger enlisted in the Air Force in 1950 and received his wings and commission as an aviation cadet in 1952. He retired in 1982 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.

Granger, United States Air Force, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a C-7 Caribous Pilot and Assistant Deputy Commander for Operations, 483d Tactical Airlift Wing, and later as Commander, 457th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, in action over Southeast Asia from 1970 to 1971. His devotion to duty and courage under all conditions serve as an inspiration to his fellow flyers. His actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
