William Gilbert served as a U.S. Army Engineer in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations during World War II, and was released from active duty in March 1946. Two months later he enlisted in the Army Air Forces and was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1949. He retired in 1982 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
