The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Charles E. Morse, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 5 May 1864, while serving with Company I, 62d New York Infantry, in action during the Wilderness Campaign, Virginia. Sergeant Morse voluntarily rushed back into the enemy’s lines, took the colors from the color sergeant, who was mortally wounded, and, although himself wounded, carried them through the fight.
