The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Carl W. Tuell (MCSN: 0-14396), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer and later Commanding Officer of Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Fleet Marine Force in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 21 July to 10 August 1944. Serving as Executive Officer, First Lieutenant Tuell aided in an attack by the Battalion down a neck of rough terrain, strongly defended by enemy bunkers and flanked on one side by a swamp and on the other by a wide road. Assuming command of his company on 27 July after his Company Commander was killed and two other officers of his unit were wounded he skillfully reorganized the unit and pushed on to spearhead a break through which ended the organized enemy resistance in that sector of the Orote Peninsula. His leadership, courage and devotion to duty under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
