The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Arthur C. Truman, Jr. (MCSN: 493788), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Reconnaissance Company Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 8 March 1945. When a hand grenade was thrown into the position occupied by him and three other men during an attempted infiltration by the enemy, Corporal Truman immediately seized the grenade and threw it clear of the position, thereby saving all four men from severe injury and possible death. Using grenades and rifle fire, he then succeeded in breaking up the infiltration and eliminating this threat to our lines. His outstanding courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
