The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Lawrence O. Truett (MCSN: 525386), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Automatic Rifleman of Company A, First Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands on 31 July 1944. During an enemy counter attack against his company, Private First Class Truett moved forward of the front lines and waited until the enemy was within thirty yards of his position and opening fire, almost single-handedly broke up the hostile attack. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Truett and the United States Naval Service.
