The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harold W. Truempy (MCSN: 520594), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Forward Observation of Battery I, Third Battalion, Thirteenth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 3 March 1945. When the Officer in Charge of his team was wounded by enemy action and fell into a cave occupied by the Japanese, Corporal Truempy fearlessly entered the cave with another Marine and affected the rescue of the Officer. His calm and decisive action together with his courageous devotion to duty in the face of constant hostile mortar and small arms fire upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services.
