The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Kenneth E. Trowbridge (MCSN: 416548), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands on November 21, 1943. When a sudden break in the telephone line disrupted vital communications with the battalion fire direction center while Private First Class Trowbridge’s forward observer party was adjusting artillery fire on enemy positions he volunteered to trace the line and repair the break. Although the greater part of the route was still under intense enemy fire, he coolly and courageously set out upon his perilous mission and despite a severe wound which later caused his death, steadfastly continued his task until communications were re-established. Private First Class Trowbridge’s great personal valor and unswerving devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
