John Dickey was commissioned in 1958 through the aviation cadet program. After flying combat missions in Vietnam,, he was a member of the Air Force Thunderbirds, then returned for a second tour of duty in Vietnam. He retired in 1990 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
