After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Garth Dettinger was discharged in 1945. He subsequently received a bachelor’s degree cum laude from Harvard College in 1948 and a doctor of medicine degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University in 1952. He returned to Air Force active duty in 1952 as a Medical Officer, and retired in 1980 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
