Dean Despinoy enlisted in the Navy in 1969 and served on submarines as an enlisted man. After leaving the Navy he earned a degree from Indiana University as was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program in 1977. He retired in 2010 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
