Rufus Dehart entered the Air Force in 1955 and enlisted in the Virginia National Guard upon his release from active duty in 1959. After receiving his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Medical College of Virginia, he re-entered Air Force duty as a Medical Officer. He retired in 1989 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
