After serving as an enlisted radio operator/gunner in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Richard Carr left the service after the war ended, graduating from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington in 1949 and subsequently served as a student missionary in Alaska while a member of the Reserves. He was ordained in 1954 as was appointed a first lieutenant in 1954. He retired in 1982 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
