Harvey Burwell was commissioned a Cavalry second lieutenant in 1913, and transferred to the Field Artillery in 1917. In the interim between the world wars he served in the Air Service and Air Corps, and subsequently served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. He retired as an Army Air Forces Brigadier General.
