The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Terrell W. Tomlin (MCSN: 334318), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of all Stretcher Bearer teams of the First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands from 14 September to 10 October 1944. During this extended and hazardous campaign Technical Sergeant Tomlin ably supervised his overworked and shorthanded teams in evacuating the many wounded of his Battalion. When his command suffered heavy casualties during an attack across fourteen hundred yards of open airfield under extremely heavy enemy artillery and mortar barrages he effectively led his teams in removing all casualties back through the hostile fire to the Battalion Aid Station and although a number of his men were wounded from enemy mortar fragments encouraged the teams to redouble their efforts and accomplish their mission. By his courage, initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout, Technical Sergeant Tomlin upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
