The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George E. Tomaiko (MCSN: 342837), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a Rifle Company attached to the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Guam in the Marianas Group on 27 July 1944. Proceeding ahead of his squad in full view of the enemy to investigate a hostile machine gun emplacement, Corporal Tomaiko put the gun out of action and destroyed the three enemy gunners manning it. Then directing his machine gun fire into the next enemy pill box, he killed nine of the enemy and although wounded during the action, completed his mission inflicting severe casualties on the enemy and contributing materially to the success of our forces. His aggressive fighting spirit and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Tomaiko and the United States Naval Service.
