The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Charlie W. Tolar (MCSN: 245149), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Fourth Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands from 15 June to 9 July 1944. Repeatedly volunteering to go on patrols into enemy infested territory, Technical Sergeant Tolar twice contacted the enemy and on the first occasion guided a patrol into a swamp filled with hostile snipers and personally annihilated eight of the Japanese. At another time he went forward to help form a front line after an artillery position had been overrun by the enemy and taking up his position, rendered valuable assistance to our troops. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Technical Sergeant Tolar and the United States Naval Service.
