Irving Branch was a Reserve sergeant major with the rank of staff sergeant while attending Norwich University. After graduating in 1934 he enrolled in the Army Air Force Cadet Training Program. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
