Richard Bohannon was commissioned a Reserve Medical Officer in the Civilian Conservation Corps in after graduating from Baylor University College of Medicine in 1932. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. From 1963 to 1967 he served as the 5th Surgeon General of the Air Force. He retired in 1967 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.
