The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Carl L. Tobiassen (MCSN: 456477), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Fire Team Leader serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 14 June 1945. When his squad was suddenly attacked by close range enemy sniper and machine gun fire during an extremely hazardous patrol into Japanese held territory, Corporal Tobiassen voluntarily moved forward with another Marine despite the deadly barrage of hostile fire and deliberately exposing himself to the enemy enabled his unit to determine the strength and disposition of Japanese Troops. When his companion was struck down by the accurate fire of three Japanese riflemen, he quickly turned on the attackers and after completely destroying them successfully evacuated his wounded comrade. By his daring initiative, valiant fighting spirit and cool courage under fire, Corporal Tobiassen contributed materially to the ultimate capture of this vital Japanese stronghold and his heroic conduct throughout this perilous mission was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
